ABOUT
I started Hapuska in 2012 as a way to combine my love of craft with my love of fashion. I was running a clothing business, which involved a lot of machine sewing, but I craved the chaos of crafty creation. Hapuska was a passion project. It emerged each summer when I would trade at festivals, and it allowed me the freedom to play, to hand sew, to repurpose vintage treasures, and to make pieces that were one of a kind, and came from the soul.
When Covid hit, I found myself stuck at home for the first summer in 15 years - with no festivals to prep for and creative energy to burn. I had always had a vague idea that I'd like to explore pattern design, so I got my head down and gave it a try. I fell in love instantly. I launched my first fabric designs that summer, and I never looked back!
Every single thing I create emerges through the process of collage - from the art to the textile designs, and even the headdresses which are formed from elements I collect and store like a magpie. For me, the creative process is always intuitive, and whilst I might guide myself towards a particular theme, I usually don't know what will emerge until it appears.
I believe very strongly that as a designer and a manufacturer I have a responsibility to safeguard sustainable business practices, and I am committed to ensuring that Hapuska always puts the planet before profits.
